"Capitol" New Home for TIARA Awards

Tamworth's new Capitol Theatre, in the Centrepoint complex behind the historical Tamworth Town Hall, will be the new home for the prestigious independent TIARA Awards next January.

The 12^th annual TIARA's - Tamworth Independent Artist Recognition Awards - will be presented on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 8pm.

"The TIARA's have had a number of homes over the years," said awards founder and President Robbie Brown, "but moving to the Capitol Theatre is a major boost for the awards in terms of a high profile venue and another step forward in positioning them as Australian country music's most important independent awards."

The Capitol is a 400-plus seat, fully fitted-out state-of-the-art theatre due to commence operating in October and is expected to host a number of other events during next year's Tamworth Country Music Festival.

"Being able to secure the new Capitol Theatre for the TIARA's is a plus for the awards," said spokesperson Jon Wolfe, "as it is the first step in taking the awards to the next level."

"We have established the TIARAs as an important adjunct to the Australian country music industry and after 11 years it is time to consolidate that position with the move to the new theatre and to present the awards in a new light."

"The independent artists far outnumber the major artists and thus represent a high proportion of the industry. More and more high profile artists are moving into the independent sector, so the TIARA's are becoming more significant as the years go by."

"The TIARA's are Tamworth’s most important nod to the independents who are the mainstay of both the January festival and the Hats Off To Country festival."

Mr Wolfe also said that discussions are underway to hopefully have an international country music personality present at the awards next year and an announcement is expected soon about a new sponsor for the TIARA's.
