| Electronic Braille Displays are used by Braille readers to read text on a computer screen, in conjunction with a Computer Screen Reader such as JAWS, VIRGO or outSPOKEN. Optek Systems can provide two excellent Braille Displays, the RBT (known in Europe as the VARIO), and the ALVA. | |||||||||||||
The RBT Electronic Braille Display comes in 20 and 40 cell formats. It is the smallest and lightest Braille display available and yet has the longest battery life - typically 40 -50 hours. Its physical dimensions make it ideal for schoolchildren, who may already be transporting a laptop back and forth. But it is nevertheless a fully featured and sophisticated display, suitable for all professional applications, and though only recently introduced to Australia it has already been installed in Government and Education Departments. Optek Systems is proud to announce that it can now provide the ALVA range of Braille displays. ALVA displays have a reputation for quality, attention to detail in design, and an abundance of features, which make them an ideal choice for the "power-user". |

The current range includes the ALVA Delphi Multimedia which has either 43 or 83 cells, and the ALVA 544 Satellite, which has 44 cells. Both displays are fully featured multimedia systems, compatible with most PC-based screen readers and operating systems. They both make use of the unique ALVA Double Touch Cursor (DTC) system; not one, but two buttons are placed above each Braille cell - the first button performs traditional Cursor Routing, ie positioning the Windows Pointer or typing cursor, the second activates speech feedback on attributes or expands upon abbreviations in the Braille line. Alternatively, the DTC buttons can be configured as Left/Right Mouse clicks. This integration of functionality in such an intuitive way makes ALVA the natural choice for advanced computer users who need simplicity and efficiency whilst navigating today's complex graphical environments. The table below summarises the main differences between the two displays :
