A Pictorial History of My Restoration

One day the page will span from the beginning to the end (if a restoration ever ends that is). If you click on the thumbnail photos you will get a full screen picture. I shall put about 10 picture on a page, and then link the next page to it.

FIRST 10 PHOTOS SECOND 10 PHOTOS THIRD 10 PHOTOS
fj1.JPG (921654 bytes) 1994 - This is how it started. This photograph was taken just before the last time I drove the FJ. I took it off the car trailer and drove it into the shed, which wasn't easy because it didn't have any brakes.
steeringwheel.JPG (42009 bytes) 1994 - In the drivers seat. All instruments were in working order.
front seat.JPG (41218 bytes) 1994 - This is a photograph of the front floor, taken under the steering wheel. The main problem with the car was the floor pans and side sills. I am led to believe that most FJ's need the floor and sills replaced in a restoration. My grandfather used the FJ to cart water around his property to water trees etc., so I guess the sped the rust process up a little. A large section of the floor and door sills were replaced.
motor.JPG (50364 bytes) 1994 - The engine actually ran quite well. It had good compression, and didn't blow any smoke.
hosing.JPG (833622 bytes) The FJ spent all of its time on the roads around West Wylong NSW. Consequently it was covered in very fine red dirt. Under the body much of it was as hard as cement. Most of this was removed with a high pressure spray, which led to a few varieties of weeds & thistles sprouting in the drive way.
wheels.JPG (921654 bytes) 1995 - Next was the removal of the front and rear ends. Both were in fairly good condition. Parts replaced included wheel bearings, brake pads, brake cylinders, tie rods, tie rod ends - basically anything that moved and could wear out over the last 45 years.
pot-plant.JPG (48732 bytes) 1995 - During extended breaks in work the FJ was disguised as a flower arrangement.
to Melb.JPG (29092 bytes) 1996 - This photograph is on the way to Melbourne to have the paint stripped. I chose to have it dipped in acid, and used G.R. Paint Stripping Car Specialists, Ph: 0397948314. They did an excellent job. The cost was $750.
acid.JPG (921654 bytes) 1996 - This photograph is back in the shed after being dipped in acid. There was quite a lot of putty on the front right panel. This, my grandfather and father decided, was from running into a cow in the early 1960's near Wylong NSW. The panel had to be replaced.
hiscock.JPG (921654 bytes) 1996 - The FJ leaving my parents place and on its way to be panel beaten and spayed at Frank Hiscocks Smash Repairs, Cootamundra. Frank is well known in the vintage car world and has an impressive collection.
